If you're a writer, you've suffered from it at one point or another, and we all know I'm talking about (dare I even say the
words?) WRITER'S BLOCK. Gives me shivers just thinking about it. When I was at my lowest point in suffering from
WB, I would fill notebook pages with "This is shit!" written over and over. I finally realized that was getting
me nowhere, so I picked a photo and just stared at it. And stared at it some more, until a story began to form in my mind.
Sounds silly, I know, but the act of picking a photo that has nothing whatsoever to do with your current project and writing
about it does help. I think distraction is the key to breaking writer's block, or at least it was for me. So,
you see that photo below? Well, I want you to write something--anything--about that photo. I also want you to share what
you've written. Yes, even if it's just "This cow shits!" over and over and over. What have you got to lose by
trying my little exercise? Just maybe a chip will fall off that block and you'll be back to your old writing self before
you know it.
